Sharing ways to manage anxiety and build self-esteem with Self-care Bear and friends! 🐻

Day Seven of The Self-Care Bear Advent Calendar ❤️

Learning to appreciate small moments of certainty, during times of uncertainty, gives us a much better chance of keeping ourselves grounded and more resilient to change.

When we talk about ‘mindfulness practice’ this is what we mean.

We can reinforce pathways in our brains that help us to feel a greater sense of stability so that we are better able to tolerate uncertainty.

Thanks to @artistsarahmisselbrook for this idea, your name is in the hat to win a Self-care Bear Keyring.

Day Three of The Self-Care Bear Advent Calendar🎄🐓❤️

This is something that so many people have to navigate throughout the year, but ramps up at Christmas; we see more people and gatherings often revolve around food!

If you struggle being around others that talk about weight, body image and calories, then keep reading…

ACCEPTANCE & REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

We can’t expect to change how others behave; sometimes it can help us to tolerate these kinds of comments if we prepare ourselves for the things we might hear. For example, If we can predict that a relative is going to say something like, ‘Did you know how many calories are in a Christmas dinner!?’ we can treat this like a mental ‘BINGO’ and tick it off a list in our mind. Having realistic expectations of how certain conversations could go can reduce feelings of disappointment and frustration. A bingo list can even add an element of humour to a family gathering and gives us a focus/distraction.

EMPATHY AND BOUNDARIES

It can be helpful to remind ourselves that often the reason others make comments about weight, food, calories and body image is because of THEIR OWN TRICKY RELATIONSHIPS to these things. Perhaps every time you notice a comment that would usually affect you, remember that this is an insight into their inner critic’s voice. Also remember that you have every right to set appropriate boundaries and engage as much or as little as you wish!

SELF-CARE AND SELF-COMPASSION

One of the reasons that comments about food, weight, calories and body-image feel hurtful (even when they are directed towards us) are because we assume the other person is judging us at the same time they are judging themselves. These comments can ignite or collude with our own insecurities; it’s important that we self-soothe by treating ourselves with kindness and compassion. Imagine what you might say to a friend in the same situation who is struggling with feelings of shame and guilt around these topics.

We have a relationship with ourselves that needs w We have a relationship with ourselves that needs work just like any other relationship.

If we want to feel less anxious and have better self-esteem then we need to show ourselves that we care.

This process is life-long and can be painful, fun, boring, slow, exciting, uncomfortable and soothing…

Sometimes we can feel like we’ve got it…and other times it can feel like we’ve gone back to square one.

Keep going 💪

Finding joy in the tiniest of things is such a hel Finding joy in the tiniest of things is such a helpful way to reduce stress and anxiety and build self-esteem.

By taking time to appreciate small moments in any environment we are telling our brains that it’s safe to stop, to breathe, to enjoy the experience. When we’re stuck in survival mode then we go from moment to moment in autopilot, we don’t give our nervous systems a chance to relax and find peace. Feeling content and peaceful is something take takes practice…we need to give our brains lots of evidence that it’s ok to switch out of high alert mode and rest.

Finding joy in the small things also stops us from getting too wrapped up in comparison, we’re less likely to tie up our identity in our jobs, how ‘successful’ we are or productive we’ve been. We might look at a bird just going about its day and it can serve as a reminder that we too are just animals, going about our days! ❤️

That bird doesn’t care how much money it makes compared to it’s bird friends, it doesn’t care whether it said the wrong thing to a friend at that party the other night, it doesn’t care how productive it’s been today…all that matters is that it’s has food, a flock, shelter and can sing it’s little heart out! The small joys remind us of what’s really important and anything else is a bonus.

So even when things feel really tough, try to find a tiny moment of joy, and step by step you’ll help your mind and body move to a place of safety.

A Christmas present to all of you to say thank you A Christmas present to all of you to say thank you for your support this year! 🎄🐻❤️

From the 1st to the 24th December I will create a drawing every day that either helps with festive/winter self-care or simply fills you with joy (during what can be a difficult time for many people!).

All I need you to do is FOLLOW The Self-Care Bear Club and tell me what you want to see by commenting on this post of sending me a message. One idea per person please ❤️

It could be something lighthearted such as ‘draw me a pigeon with a party hat on…or something a little more practical like ‘what’s a good way of managing expectations with regards to ‘X’ this Christmas?’

If your idea is pulled out of the hat the I’ll bring it to life as a reel or post.

As an EXTRA treat…I’ll pull one idea back out of the hat at the end of the month and that person will win a handmade Self-care Bear felt key ring ❤️🐻
